Scientists are discovering more and more diseases transmitted by mosquitoes. The mosquito spreads dangerous diseases like malaria which kills over two million people and infects over two hundred million every year. Our only option is to prevent mosquito bites by draining stagnant pools of water, use of treated mosquito nets, and the use of mosquito repellants. Some of the available natural mosquito repellants are:
When you crush lavender flowers, they produce a fragrance and oil that repels mosquitoes. Crush lavender flowers and apply the oil on the exposed areas of your body. Lavender oil has been known to calm and soothe the skin.
Thyme oil is efficient for repelling the anopheles mosquito that spreads malaria. Mixing thyme oil with lotions and oils can make a large batch of mosquito repellent.
- For a spray: - Add five tablespoons of Thyme oil to two ounces of water in a spray bottle and apply it on the exposed parts of the body.
- For a lotion: - Add four drops of Thyme oil to every teaspoon of lotion or olive oil and apply it on your arms, neck, and feet.
Lemon Eucalyptus Oil
Since the early 20th century, lemon eucalyptus has been one of the most well-known natural mosquito repellants. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have approved and endorsed lemon eucalyptus oil as an effective mosquito repellant. To make an effective repellant at home, mix one part lemon eucalyptus oil to ten parts sunflower oil and apply it on your exposed areas of the body.
Catnip oil offers protection from mosquitoes for several hours. The white and pink flower can reach a height of 18 inches but the oil extracted from the bruised leaves is most valuable. This oil is ten times more effective than conventional mosquito repellents.
These natural remedies from plants are harmful in high concentrations especially to children under the age of three years. Diluting the natural oils in water, lotion and in other oils makes these natural oils safe to apply on the skin. To ensure you are not allergic, apply some on a small patch of skin and do not use if you are allergic.
